Ahhhh it’s so nice to be back on the blog… I’ve missed it so much! It’s been a crazy month and I haven’t had time to write here, but hopefully you’ve been following on Instagram because I post in my feed or Insta Stories every day. If you follow on social media then you know that last weekend my husband and I attended the Creative Arts Emmys and had a blast. Now I’m rounding up everything that went into that magical day and night of festivities!
In case you don’t know our background, my husband and I are both in the entertainment industry, he as a television editor and I as a television producer (that is how we met back in 2005). We’ve both had the honor of enjoying numerous Emmy ceremonies (first separately and then together) as both nominees and winners. Some of my most cherished memories have been made at the Emmys over the years and it’s exciting to me each and every time.
Many people are confused as to why there are multiple Emmy ceremonies so I wanted to quickly explain that process. In Hollywood there’s something known as “below-the-line” and “above-the-line” employees on a production. These terms are derived from production budget sheets where the costs of “above-the-line” positions like writers, producers, actors and directors are separated from the rest of the production costs such as editing, lighting, wardrobe, hair, makeup, etc. The Creative Arts Emmys recognize excellence in television-making from all “below-the-line” categories, and then a week later the Primetime Emmys (the ceremony that most people know) acknowledges everything else. The reason for the division is simply time because if these were combined into one broadcast, then it would be eight hours long!! Both of the events have a red carpet, an award ceremony, and then a Governors Ball dinner and party afterward.
This year my husband was nominated for his 15th Emmy for television editing and I couldn’t be prouder of him and his incredible talent! We decided to go for a very classic Hollywood look with a gold dress for me, and a traditional tuxedo for him. I’m going to share all of the details about my hair, makeup, dress, accessories and even undergarments. Plus, I have lots of red carpet and Governors Ball photos too. I hope you enjoy following our experience just as much as I love sharing it with you!
I have been to five Emmy award shows and each time I bought my dress from BCBG Max Azria. They always have such an amazing selection of unique, special occasion dresses that fit me so well. This year was an extra special bonus because I actually found my dress during their 40% sale and snagged it for only $120!!!! That is by far the least amount I’ve ever paid for a fancy dress. I’ve always wanted to have a gold moment and this dress was calling my name!
Right after I purchased my dress, I was walking through the mall and stumbled upon the most glorious pair of shoes that sparkled from afar and matched my dress perfectly. I just had to stop and try them on, even though I knew I couldn’t afford them. These Stuart Weitzman shoes were Carrie Bradshaw fabulous I’ll have you know!! Alas, I found a reasonably-priced pair of gold heels that would look beautiful with the dress.
Next, I found two awesome pairs of earrings that both looked great with my dress. In fact, I couldn’t even decide which ones to wear until I was literally walking out the door for the event! In the end I was thrilled that I wore the stars because they just seemed to fit the vibe of the evening. Finding the purse took some more time because I don’t like to spend money on a fancy purse that I may or may not be able to use again. Luckily, I walked into Macy’s during a big handbag sale and actually found two purses that matched! I’m really happy with the bag I chose and the sale price of $35.
We also can’t forget about what to wear underneath a dress like this. My dress had sheer cutouts so I couldn’t wear a regular bra because the straps would show, or a strapless bra because the center would show. I ended up finding the best adhesive silicone bra at Target at half the price of other similar products I’ve had, AND it worked so much better! It was in the mid-nineties outside on the red carpet and these adhesive cups never moved once and provided perfect coverage. I highly recommend them! For my bottom half, I chose this very comfortable pair of Spanx underwear that provide a nice slimming surface under the dress. If you’re looking for more intense coverage that really sucks you in, then try these Spanx here.
HAIR & MAKEUP
The costs for going to events like this can add up quickly so I try to save money wherever I can. I had a gift card for Drybar so I kept it simple and started my morning there getting my hair done. For makeup, I called my extremely talented friend and celebrity makeup artist Jenna Garagiola to work her magic! The best part is that she comes to you which alleviates so much stress on the day of an event. If you live in the Los Angeles area and need professional makeup done, then she’s definitely your girl.
THE RED CARPET
Red carpets are what Hollywood is all about and you can’t help feeling the fun buzz that surrounds it. It’s an electric energy mixed with lots of glamour, and it’s always fun to meet some of the celebrities too!
THE AWARDS CEREMONY
After walking the red carpet, chatting with colleagues and grabbing a drink, it was time to take a seat in the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. My husband was nominated for his editing work on The Amazing Race but unfortunately didn’t walk away with a win this time. But what they say is true… it’s honestly an honor just to be nominated. And… our fancy night out was just getting started!
THE GOVERNORS BALL
After the awards ceremony, there was a short walk over to the L.A. LIVE Event Deck for the Governors Ball where there was food, drinks, dancing and a lot of fun. This was the first Emmy event I’d ever been to where they didn’t have a sit-down dinner. Instead they had tiny portions of things set up at different tables and you just grabbed what you wanted. The wait staff also passed things on their trays as well. Everything I tried was absolutely delicious but it was a little strange how it all worked, and how small each serving was. I enjoyed the champagne the best anyway! We were having so much fun catching up with old friends and colleagues that we actually shut the place down (hahaha)!! Who says parents can’t party?!
Don’t forget to tune in tonight for the Primetime Emmy Awards airing on NBC at 8:00p EST and 5:00p PST. I also set my DVR to record all of the red carpet specials too so I don’t miss any of the fashion. Tell me below if you will be watching tonight too, and what your favorite TV show is!
Thanks so much for reading! xoxo, JB
