In September, I had to have shoulder surgery to remove a large calcium deposit and repair my rotator cuff. As I started physical therapy, I was told that I wouldn’t be able to regain normal athletic activities for at least six months and that skiing over the holidays would be out of the question. That timeline wasn’t going to work for me as we already had our family ski trip booked, so I was determined to kick some PT butt. Long story short, at 16 weeks post-op I was cleared to ski and we were off to our favorite spot! As a precaution I didn’t use my poles much, and my goal was to stay in one piece (haha). Today’s #TravelTuesday post is a review of the best kept secret in California skiing… June Mountain.
June Mountain is a five-hour drive outside of Los Angeles and operates under the Mammoth Mountain resorts umbrella but is the less expensive, more mellow mountain of the two. It’s about a 20-minute drive from Mammoth Lakes and is the PERFECT place for family skiing! I have two kids (ages five and seven) who are skiers like me, as well as my snowboarding husband. At June, we are all able to ski together in harmony. Oh, did I mention that kids 12 and under ski free? Yes, you read that right…free lift tickets for kids!
The hills are immaculate with breathtaking views, and offerings for all ski levels. Skiing with young children who are still learning can be stressful, but the lift operators are always friendly and patient which goes a long way in my book. We’ve also had excellent ski instructors when we’ve put our little ones in lessons. And if you need to rent equipment, they make that process fast and easy too. The entire resort staff is unbelievably helpful and pleasant, and know how to make guests feel comfortable.
The kids really love when we’re there on a Saturday afternoon because that’s when Bucky, the mountain mascot, has a bonfire with dancing, cookies and cocoa. Bucky takes pictures with everyone and then skis a run with all the children. My kids go absolutely crazy for this because Bucky does super cool tricks all the way down the mountain!
Make sure to check the June Mountain website for more information, events, and other ways to save money on your ski experience. If you’re looking for a place to ski as a family then I highly recommend June Mountain. We try to ski at least four times a season and we’ve made so many incredible family memories. Bring on the snow!
