Do you want to dye Easter eggs with your kiddos but can’t find any because of the coronavirus quarantine? Well, I’ve got a fun solution that will still make good use of your food coloring. Using items already in my pantry, I’m making these adorable chocolate-covered Oreos that are sure to be a great substitute for the Easter egg tradition. My oldest son and I had a ton of fun making these!
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED:
Oreos (regular are probably best, but I had the ‘thins’ in the pantry)
Coconut Oil (to thin out chocolate if needed)
** Because of the current “stay-at-home” situation, the easiest thing to do is order these items online at Target (all linked above in pink), and do curbside pick-up!
Melt some of the white chocolate for your first color. I always use glass measuring cups and the microwave. Start heating for 1-minute, then stir. Continue to reheat for 30 seconds, then stir. Now heat for just 10 seconds at a time until completely melted and stirs easily.
Stir in a small spoonful of coconut oil to thin the mixture enough to coat Oreos easily. Every set of chocolate melts is different, but I usually have to add at least two small spoonfuls of coconut oil for my desired consistency. Now add your food coloring, starting with just a couple drops. Keep stirring and adding drops until you reach your desired color.
Dip your desired amount of Oreos in this first color and set on a prepared cookie sheet covered with wax paper or parchment. Add festive sprinkles and let the Oreos harden on the tray. Then repeat the above steps for every color that you want to make.
For presentation, smash up a portion of the Oreos in a bag to use as a serving base for the rest of the “eggs” to sit in.
Here’s hoping this chocolate-covered Oreo Easter egg idea not only proves to be a yummy treat, but also a bonding activity for your family during these tough times.
